What is an IP rating?
IP ratings, or Ingress Protection ratings, are a standardized way to measure a bag's resistance to solid objects (like dust) and water. When applied to waterproof bags, they indicate how well the bag can protect your belongings from the elements.
Here's a breakdown of the two digits in an IP rating:
First Digit, Applies to Solid Objects/Particulates:
- 0: No protection against solid objects
- 1: Protection against large solid objects (like your hand)
- 2: Protection against large solid objects (like fingers)
- 3: Protection against small objects (like tools)
- 4: Protection against solid objects (like dust)
- 5: Protection against dust limited ingress
- 6: Total protection against dust
Second Digit:
- 0: No protection against water
- 1: Protection against dripping water
- 2: Protection against water dripping at up to 15 degrees
- 3: Protection against water spraying at up to 60 degrees
- 4: Protection against water splashing from all directions
- 5: Protection against water jets
- 6: Protection against strong water jets
- 7: Protection against temporary immersion in water
- 8: Protection against continuous immersion in water
For a waterproof bag, you'll typically want a high first digit (like 6 for total dust protection) and a high second digit, minimally 6, but a number like 7 or 8 is better for higher water resistance.
Common IP Ratings for Waterproof Bags:
- IP67: This is a very common rating for waterproof bags. It means the bag is totally dustproof and can withstand immersion in water up to 1 meter deep for 30 minutes.
- IP66: This rating indicates even slightly less water resistance, offering protection agains heavy rain or high pressure spray.
Remember, a high IP rating is a good indicator of a bag's waterproof capabilities, but it's not the only factor to consider. The bag's materials, seams, and closure system also play a crucial role in its overall waterproof performance. For best water resistance look for bags made of TPU or PVC which are fully waterpoof and airtight even when submerged.
